RICHARD EMERSON, BREWER

Richard Emerson is the head brewer at Dunedin’s iconic Emerson’s Brewery.

Which of the Emerson’s beers is the quintessential Dunedin brew? Our Pilsner is a twist on the classic German Pilsner, and features that distinctive NZ ‘sauvignon blanc’ hop flavour,

Where are Dunedin’s best places to drink Emerson’s? The funky Inch Bar (Click here) near the Botanic Gardens, Albar (Click here) in Stuart St, and Eureka (Click here), which is always a favourite with lunching academics. Tonic (Click here) is a great craft beer bar, and down Dunedin’s laneways is Pequeno (Click here), just off Moray Pl. Another must-visit spot is Mou Very (Click here), the tiny ‘hole in the wall’ bar on George St.

What’s your favourite Dunedin food and beer match? The Carey’s Bay Hotel (Click here) near Port Chalmers serves excellent Queen scallops harvested by the local fishermen. They’re really good served with Emerson’s Pilsner.

Enough about beer – where do you recommend for a coffee? Nova Café (Click here).

What are your favourite Dunedin and Otago experiences? The Farmer’s Market (Click here) held at Dunedin Railway Station on a Saturday morning is hard to beat. Also take the Taieri Gorge Railway (Click here) from Dunedin to Middlemarch to start the Otago Central Rail Trail, a brilliant bike ride through to Clyde. Definitely stop at the Waipiata Country Hotel (Click here) for a cold beer.
